What is IBPS | How to get a job in bank?

So you are a graduate and want to get a job in bank, you can get a bank job by giving a common written examination conducted by Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS). IBPS came into existence in 2011 when it conducted its first common written examination (CWE) for Probationary Officer in 19 leading public sector banks.

There are three ways to enter a banking field:

1. One is through Probationary Officer (PO). This is a bank officer post and has a very good career growth. You can reach to level of General Manager (GM). The initial salary of a bank probationary officer is approximately 27000 (the basic pay 14500) plus incentives like entertainment facilities, medical facilities, newspaper are provided. The salary
in State Bank of India (SBI) is slightly higher than other nationalized banks. You can expect a salary in a range of 30000 to 37000 per month. The salary of all post in bank is going to increase from July 2013. There will be approx.  25% hike in salary of all bank staff.

2. Second is through bank clerk/single window operator which is a stable job. There are no risks associated with these jobs and there are no targets to achieve. But salary of a bank clerk is less. You can expect a salary of 15000-18000 as your starting salary (the basic salary is 7200). Clerks are also provided the incentives like medical, entertainment and petrol.

3. Third is through Specialist Officer (SO). This is very good post with lots of facilities. An SO in a bank may be a law officer, agriculture officer, an IT officer, a marketing officer or a language officer. To get selected as an SO you should have specialized degree such as for an IT officer you should have B.tech (CS/IT), MCA or degree in IT. For marketing officer you need to have a MBA degree or a marketing degree. The pay scale of a specialist officer is same as of a Probationary Officer. 

How can I get a job in bank?
For getting a job in bank there are two types of examination in India:

1.    1. One is through IBPS CWE: IBPS conduct four types of examinations for entry to 21 leading public sector banks. Earlier there were 19 banks but two banks (IDBI and ECGE) are recently added to IBPS recruitment derives. IBPS four types of examinations namely:
a.     IBPS CWE for Probationary Officers (PO).
b.     IBPS CWE for clerks/single window operator.
c.     IBPS CWE for RRB (Regional Rural Banks).
d.     IBPS CWE for Specialist Officers (SO).
IBPS conduct these examinations once in a year. To get the details of these examinations you can check regularly IBPS website.
              What is the procedure for selection through IBPS?
IBPS conducts its examination every year. These exams are known as common written examinations. The online test is of 250/200 marks. The marks distribution is as follows:

For IBPS PO:
Total marks-250

Quantitative Aptitude (50 marks) – 50 question.
Reasoning (50 marks) – 50 question.
English (25 marks) – 50 question.
General knowledge with special reference to banking industry (50 marks) – 50 question.
Computer knowledge (50 marks) – 50 question.
Descriptive test (25 marks) - 3 question of 50 marks. 

For IBPS Clerk:
Total marks-200

Quantitative Aptitude (50 marks) – 50 question.
Reasoning (50 marks) – 50 question.
English (50 marks) – 50 question.
General knowledge with special reference to banking industry and computer knowledge (50 marks) – 50 question.

For IBPS SO:
Total marks-200

Quantitative Aptitude (50 marks) – 50 question.
Reasoning (50 marks) – 50 question.
English (25 marks) – 50 question.
Professional knowledge with special reference to your degree (75 marks) – 50 question.

For IBPS RRB:
Total marks-200

Quantitative Aptitude (50 marks) – 50 question.
Reasoning (50 marks) – 50 question.
English/Hindi (50 marks) – 50 question.
General knowledge with special reference to banking industry and computer knowledge (50 marks) – 50 question.

After online written test, results are declared on IBPS website within one month and candidates shortlisted in CWE are called for common interview. Common interview is taken at different location in India and all banks participate in the Interview process. After the common interview results are declared and total weight age score (CWE and common interview) is provided to candidates. After that candidates can fill the order of preference of 21 banks. After filling the preference result is announced and vacancies are allocated to successful candidates. If you are selected in the process, you will be intimidated by bank via SMS and e-mail. The whole process takes hardly three months to complete.

1.  2. The second way to get a bank job is through SBI exams: State Bank of India conducts examinations for recruitment in its own bank and its associated branch. The procedure for SBI exam is same. And the same pattern as described above is followed. But the exam is offline in nature. SBI exam for POs is not easy to crack and require a great deal of hard work to crack exam.
